No one could have predicted the phenomenon that was Supernatural. Aided and abetted by the single "Smooth" with matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas, the disc catapulted Carlos Santana back onto the charts after an absence of over a decade. Supernatural reunited the guitarist with Clive Davis, the record company exec who had headed Columbia Records during Santana's heyday, when nearly every new release from the first incarnation of the Santana band went platinum.

The vinyl editions of records like Santana (top ten hit: "Evil Ways"), Abraxas (top five hit: "Black Magic Woman") and Santana III (top ten hit: "Everybody's Everything") can still be found in nearly any large vinyl record collection dating back to the early '70s. And, of course, let's not forget Santana's appearance at Woodstock, where the band gave a stellar performance of "Soul Sacrifice."

All those platinum records and top ten hits later, Santana's mix of Latin percussion and searing guitar eventually fell out of fashion, only to be revived by the end-of-the-millennium release Supernatural. Since then there has been no looking back for this monumentally influential artist, whose career spans nearly forty years.

Shaman, Santana's 2002 follow-up to Supernatural, featured guests like Michelle Branch, Seal, Dido, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, Ozomatli and reggae rock band P.O.D. A new Santana record, complete with collaborations with some of contemporary pop's most glittering names, is planned for a spring release, and coincides with a tour showcasing the talents of one of rock's most enduring figures.
